Welcome to Portforward's guide to the game, Space Engineers! Click 'New World' to get started. For this guide, we'll be teaching you how to survive in the very cruel space. To accomplish this, select the 'Survival' option and pick some appropriate settings and a pre-loaded map. When starting out.

Start

I start with one engine bay, depeind on the symetry and thrust I want in my ship. I use the symetry option to really make my ships come out well. Then I work from the engines to the front, then top to bottom.

I try to make the interior first just later I felt like my ship was too small then I wouldn't have to delete and recreate sections. I make my ships with a lot of angles, trying not to have any 90 degree angles on the outside for cosmetics. I make sure I have a bridge for my cockpit, a hanger for my smaller ships, engine room(s) for my reactors and gyros, and sometimes other rooms like cabbins and stuff.

I add lights and plenty of side and front thrusters to make sure I can control my ship well. Then I take her for a test run. Then I paint her. As some have mentioned: Concept. But the next step, i find and use, is to build a sort of wireframe/skeleton of the ship. Basically creating its basic shape out of single strips of armouring. Then do the same for the inside.

Create a few wireframes of rooms and corridors. Dont flesh it out until you know what you need to be fleshing out. I know its tempting to get to it straight away and start decorating and creating full corridors and rooms from the start but that can get confusing, and irksome. Especially if you decide to tweak the design a little during creation but find your fully built room is in the way. Which brings me to my next point.

When fleshing out your skeleton do it section by section. That's room by room. Corridor by corridor. Here is another reason wireframe works well: If you decide to get rid of a part of the ship mid build, it is east to just CTRL X on a wireframe as all you need to do is cut the room/corridor from the rest of the wireframe, so it is no longer connected to rest of the ship. I do this for all builds (Space stations/Ships) It saves a lot of time. And lastly, build a dry dock space station.

It only needs to be a frame. Give it power and gravity and place to stand and really look over your ship. You can also create rods that will steady your ship in case of any accidents.

The dry dock may sound cosmetic, but used right it can be very handy.Hope this helps. The beginning of the UNSC Saratoga. Began before symmetry mode.

I originally attempted to make it 1:1 to the original design, was tough, i actually wasnt sure if i liked it at this point.Added the hangar bay at this point. Keep in mind that this is only HALF the ship, symmetry mode still hasnt been released. At this point I can see the actual ship, however still not sure if happy about it.Added the loading elevator to the back.

This was irritating due to the awkard angle, The ship is starting to get big at this point, FPS is suffering, Construction continues.Symmetry mode is released. Finally build the other half of the ship, FPS is seriously taking a hit by now. Added the base of the wings. The wings at this point are my major fear, they have curves which are extremely difficult to recreate in blocks.Added detail such as color, those defense turrets, etc. The wings are beginning to be constructed. They are looking alright at this point, however this is the up to date scale of my ship:)Interior hangar with my pelicans in them:) Although this is based off of an existing shipin the Halo series, these frigates have always caught my imagination. They seemed majestic to me.

The challenge to me was to build this ship 1:1 exactly. So far the ship is exactly 1:1 in height, width, and length.Sorry this is a long post. Originally posted by:The beginning of the UNSC Saratoga. Casualsailor, you are incorrect. You don't have to start a new ship from a landing gear at all now, that was the old system when there was a specific button for it in the G menu. Now, you can start a ship with any block you want. If I'm building in gravity, I usually just place a frame of small light armor blocks on the ground in a giant H, then build up from it and use that as a base to work off of.The other more complicated way to do it is build a rotor, then replace the head with a small rotor head and build from there. You can use a landing gear as a start for your new ship, but realize it will not necessarily lockdown until you have completed it and sometimes even given it power. Originally posted by:it may just be the surface im trying to build on, but i tryed that and couldnt get it to switch over to small ship First, if you get a large-ship 'ghost' block, press the same number again to turn it into a small-ship block. Second, bringing a ghost block into contact with a large-ship block will make the ghost into a large-ship block (and align it to the large-ship grid); press the number again to turn it back to small-ship (and disable the alignment). It can be a bit of a nuisance, but it doesn't take that long to get used to.You don't have to start with a landing gear, but a landing gear will stick to the surface it's placed on, while other small-ship blocks won't.

Connectors and merge blocks sort-of work, but both sides have to be powered. I find a landing gear to be the easiest option. Originally posted by:Casualsailor, you are incorrect. What I said was not incorrect. Yes you can drop a block and start a ship. But that block will not be locked to either the ground or a grid and is subject to being knocked over or toppling over should you build up from in in an unbalanced way.Landing gear of both sizes will lock to a grid of either light or heavy armor blocks even in Survival and even before it is built. I tested that right before posting this.

It will even lock to the ground but it is possble that it will not which is why I recommend always building on a platform. So although it is possible to start a new ship without starting with a landing gear the benefits outway the negatives. And even on a planet I stand by my advice that it is best to start with a landing gear locked to a platform. But I appreciate that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Not all will keep hair out of your teeth.
